Learn about all available export formats in Codex Editor and how to export your translation project
Codex Editor supports a wide range of export formats. The export wizard walks you through a three-step process: select files, choose a format, and pick a save location.
How to Export
- Open the Main Menu from the sidebar
- Click Export Project
- Step 1 — Select files: Choose the
.codexfiles you want to export. Files are grouped by import type (e.g., all USFM files together, all DOCX files together). You can only export files from one group at a time. - Step 2 — Choose format: Pick an export format (see below). You can also toggle Audio export to include per-cell audio attachments alongside your chosen text format.
- Step 3 — Select location: Choose a folder on your computer to save the exported files.
- Click Export to finish.
You must set your source and target languages in Project Settings before the export view will load.
Export Formats
The formats available in Step 2 depend on which file group you selected in Step 1. Not all formats appear for every file type.
Round-trip Export
If your files were imported with a round-trip importer, the Round-trip Export option appears. This intelligently detects the original file format and exports back to it with your translations applied.
Supported round-trip formats:

When in doubt, use Round-trip Export. It automatically picks the right format based on how the file was originally imported.
Subtitle Export
For files imported with the Subtitles importer, three subtitle-specific options are available:
- SubRip (SRT) — Standard subtitle format, plain text only, compatible with most video players
- WebVTT with Styling — Web-native subtitles with text formatting preserved
- WebVTT Plain — Web-native subtitles without formatting
All subtitle exports preserve the original timestamps.
Standard Text Formats
These are available for most file types:
- Generate Plaintext — Plain text with minimal formatting. Universal compatibility.
- Generate XLIFF — XML Localization Interchange File Format for professional translation workflows.
Scripture-Specific Formats
These appear only for USFM and eBible file groups:
- Generate USFM — Export with full USFM markers (
\id,\c,\v, etc.). Includes an option to skip USFM validation for faster export. - Generate HTML — Web pages with chapter navigation.
Data Export
These are available for all file types and useful for analysis or quality assurance:
- CSV — Comma-separated values with ID, source text, target text, and metadata columns
- TSV — Tab-separated values with the same columns as CSV
- Backtranslations (CSV) — Exports backtranslations with ID, source text, translation, and backtranslation columns
Audio Export
The Audio toggle at the top of Step 2 lets you export per-cell audio attachments alongside any text format. You can optionally embed timestamps in audio metadata (WAV, WebM, M4A). Audio can also be exported on its own without selecting a text format.
Tips
- Mixed-format projects: If your project has files from different importers (e.g., some DOCX and some USFM), you'll need to export each group separately since you can only select files from one group at a time.
- Test first: Export a single file before batch-exporting an entire project to verify the output looks correct.
- Round-trip requirements: Round-trip export only works if the file was originally imported with a round-trip importer. If you see an error about importer type mismatch, re-import the original file using the correct round-trip importer.
